Red Wines

from Velvendo, Greece

Greek red wines are made from Greek grape varieties with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) such as Agiorgitiko, Mavrotragano, Xinomavro and Mavrodaphne but also many wines from international varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah) as well as many blends of red varieties worth trying.

Ktima Erithros

Type: Dry Red, Protected Geographical Indication Velvendo.

Varieties: Xinomavro, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vinification: Each variety is vinified separately in a “classic” way. After the end of alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wines are transferred in oak barrels for a year, during which they are racked and blended according to their evolution.

Description: Deep ruby color, complex aroma that combines spicy notes with mature and dried red fruits like red current and cassis. Ripe dried red currants and cassis on the palate, full-bodied, with ripe and integrated tannins, excellent balance with an aromatic and lingering aftertaste at the end.

Tsapournakos

Type: Dry red, Protected Geographical Indication Velvendo.

Varieties: Tsapournakos (Cabernet Franc).

Vinification: Traditional red wine vinification. Following a long maceration on the skins, the young wine is transferred to oak cask, where the malolactic fermentation takes place. It matures in cask for one year and is then bottled and further aged.

Description: Dark red in color, with preserved berries and flowers on the nose composing its intense and complex bouquet. Smooth beginning on the palate with well-structured and balanced tannins, round and rich, long aromatic persistence with red berry fruit and citrus together with herbs and spicy characters. Attractive wine has substance and elegance endorsing its varietal character.

Xinomavro

Type: Dry red, Protected Geographical Indication Velvendo.

Varieties: Xinomavro.

Vinification: Traditional red wine vinification. Following a long maceration on the skins, the young wine is transferred to oak casks, where the malolactic fermentation takes place. It matures in cask for one year and is then bottled and further aged.

Description: Deep purple in color, berries on the nose together with flowers and herbs, incorporated with earthy and spicy notes. Dried berry fruits on the palate, hint of dried tomato and herbs, vigorous integrated tannins, showing deep flavored body and great backbone and an admirable finish. A seductive wine, with classy distinctive varietal character.

Kourites Red

Type: Dry red, Protected Geographical Indication Velvendo.

Varieties: Xinomavro, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vinification: From old times, between the Lake Polyfytos and the Pieria Mountains, in an altitude of 400m, grow vineyards with rich harvest that fill of “Kourites”, large wooden barrels used to store the wines of high quality with a delicate flavor and subtle aroma. Produced from certain varieties such as Xinomavro 35%, Merlot 35% and Cabernet Sauvignon 30%, in a deep purple color, aromas of forest fruits and spices.

Velventoinos

Type: Dry Red, Protected Geographical Indication Velvendo.

Varieties: Xinomavro and Syrah.

Vinification: Maturing for 18 months in oak barrels it gives us a deep ruby red color, releasing aromas from sour cherries, fresh red colored fruits and vanilia with hints of black pepper, in combination with mature tannins.

Description: VelventOinos is matching with harmony Xinomavro and Syrah. Excellent for red meat and feathered game.

Adam

Varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Xinomavro.

Vinification: Maturing for 12 months in oak barrels it highlights the intense aromas from roses, sour cherries, plums and red colored fruits in its bright ruby red color and soft tannins.

Description: Adam is the result of a well balanced blend between Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Xinomavro. Excellent for red meat and flavoured cheeses.
