Ktima Vogiatzi Presentation
33 kilometers southeast of Kozani, at the foot of Pieria and next to the lake of Polyfyto, lies the town of Velvento, a picturesque town of Western Macedonia. Traditional settlement, with remarkable Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments, is surrounded by a beautiful landscape composed of the green hillsides of Pieria, covered with small ponds and waterfalls, 56 picturesque country churches and fertile plain with orchards and vineyards.
In Velvendo, as in all of Macedonia, ambe cultivation has deep roots and a long tradition. In the past century, it was one of the main crops in the area and covered an area of about 2600 acres. In 1920, the phylloxera appears, a disease that gradually destroys vineyards, to be re-established after 1930 in American subjects where both local and foreign varieties are vaccinated. Since then, about 1,000 acres of vines have been preserved.
«Velvento for me was the place of my parents … I was listening to home good talk and nostalgia for this place …»
A modern 3-hectare vineyard was created by the lake, located in an old vine of the Voyatzis family. Designed to produce high-quality wines of a distinctive character, it was planted with local and other varieties during 1991-1994.
The Voyatzis family enjoys a long heritage as wine merchants, documented since the early 20th century, when large quantities of wine from the Velvento area were transported for sale at the then developing town of Katerini, where the family settled, running a wine-cellar and ouzo-house until 1922.
Members of the third family generation, Yannis, who has studied oenology at the University of Bordeaux, France and has substantial experience in the Greek wine production, along with his brother, Nico, who is an engineer, and their father, Harissis, decided to return to Velvento and establish a new, privately owned vineyard.

Eirini Zande, chemist-oenologist, is in charge of the on site management of the winery, while Petros and Efthimis are attending the vineyard with the utmost care and love.
«The Voyatzi Famili was from Velvento. The family went to Katerini to trade but they ended up just selling wines and Tsipouro from there»
The 85 hectares vineyard, is situated between the Pieria mountains and Polyfytos lake, at an altitude of 340 meters. Its location next to the water that almost touches the vineyard (40 meters the shortest distance) is the powerful element, which makes the wines of the estate different. Even though the climate is continental the mild local lacustrine aura that grows during the day, balances temperature and keeps humidity high. Thus, plants do not suffer and continue functioning unhindered until late afternoon bringing grapes to ripeness with sugars, acids, and aromas in harmony.
Gentle slopes create a mild relief with a northeast to south orientation. Within this area one can find sandy-loam, clay-loam and deep soils, in many places enriched with calcium carbonate, which improves their structure. In these soils and the conditions created by the positive effect of the lake, plants are sufficiently supplied with water from the natural soil’s resources. Thanks to that special combination of soil and meso-climate (the climate at vineyard site), the basis for an exceptional vineyard is created.
Assyrtiko, Chardonnay, Malvasia Aromatica, Xinomavro, Moschomavro and Tsapournakos are the main varietals of the estate, which coexist with several other local varieties grown experimentally.
The diversity of soil types allowed us to choose the best location for each variety and its rootstock in order to produce wines of high quality, with personality and character.
From the creation of the vineyard we apply the principles of organic agriculture. The cultivation management is not aiming in just getting from nature to produce grapes of high quality, but also to protect and preserve the vineyard’s ecosystem.
So with a combination of experience, advanced knowledge and technology, soil quality is systematically checked and greenhouse gas emissions are low. It is about a ‘natural’ terroir.
